Born from a simple frustration

It started with laundry. After hanging clothes outside on what a weather app called a "fine day" — only to find them soaked three hours later — we started wondering why no tool just told you what to do.

Humidity was 82%. Wind was pulling in from the coast. The forecast showed sun, but not that kind of sun. A regular weather app had all this data — it just never translated it into an answer.

So we built one. Open Window Today launched in 2024 as a single check — should I open my windows? — and has grown into 32 home-specific cards covering everything from laundry and gardening to migraine risk, air quality and UV safety.

Today, more than 50,000 people use it daily across 120+ countries. It's free, has no ads, and never requires a sign-in.

Decisions, not data dumps

Most weather tools optimise for comprehensiveness. We optimise for clarity. Every check on Open Window Today has one output: Yes, No, or Wait — with a single plain-English reason. No numbers you have to interpret. No charts you have to read. Just an answer.

Under the hood, each check runs live data — AQI, PM2.5, temperature, humidity, wind, UV index, pollen risk and barometric pressure — through thresholds tuned specifically for that task. The window check cares about humidity and AQI. The laundry check cares about humidity and wind. The migraine card watches barometric pressure drops. Each one is its own logic model.

We update when you search, and auto-refresh every 10 minutes if you keep the page open. The 48-hour forecast strip lets you plan ahead — tap any time slot to see how all 32 cards would change.

Open Window Today is built and maintained by Akshay Gawli and a small group of contributors who care deeply about making useful tools that respect people's time and attention.

We're based in Melbourne, Australia — which means we've tested everything against coastal humidity, UV extremes, pollen season, and the kind of weather that changes in 20 minutes. We build for real conditions.
